Jon Konold
Head Football Coach & Offensive Coordinator/QB's
Coach Konold is entering his 11th season as the Head Football Coach of the Willmar Cardinals.  His overall record at Willmar High School is 52-48. The 2018 season was a breakthrough year for Coach Konold and the Cardinals as they had an 11-2 record and a Runner-up finish in the Class 4A Prep Bowl.   In the past four seasons Coach Konold has led the Cardinals to three Section Final games. The 2018 State appearance was the first in 30 years for the Cardinal football program. 

Coach Konold is entering his 21st season as a football coach.  Before coming to Willmar Coach Konold was the Offensive Coordinator at Mankato West High School (2007-08).  During the 2008 season the Mankato West Scarlets won the Class 4A Prep Bowl. From 2003-2006 he was the Offensive Coordinator and Wide Receivers Coach for the Austin Packers. In the fall of 2003 season the Packers made the Section Finals before losing to Farmington.  Coach Konold began his coaching career (1998-2002) at Grand Prairie High School in Grand Prairie, TX. In his time at Grand Prairie he coached at the Middle School level (1998-99) and at Grand Prairie High School, coaching running backs, tight ends and offensive line.  

Coach Konold teaches 7th grade Math at Willmar Middle School.  He is married to Meghan Konold (13 years) and has three children, Anna (10), Jack (7) and Claire (3).  Meghan works for Jennie-O Turkey Store in IT services where she is a Manager of Applications. Anna and Jack both attend Roosevelt Elementary School and involved in many activities.

Ken Heitzman
Offensive Line Coach

Coach Heitzman began his coaching career in 1987 as a Graduate Assistant at the University of Minnesota-Morris coaching defensive line. After graduating from UMM Ken began his teaching and coaching career at Willmar in 1988. Heitzman spent two years as the offensive and defensive line coach before taking over as defensive coordinator. In 1997, Heitzman took over as head coach for Cardinals leading the program for the next 12 years. Heitzman was also responsible for beginning the Willmar Youth Football Association in 1999 which created a tackle football league for Willmar and other area community fifth and sixth graders. After stepping down as head coach of the Cardinal football program in 2008, Heitzman spent three years coaching the defensive line at Ridgewater College. He returned to the Cardinal football program as offensive line coach in 2013. Heitzman teaches social studies at Willmar Senior High and is married to Jeanne, they have two sons, Matthew 25 and Michael 22.

Brad Foss
Running Backs Coach

 Coach Foss will start his third year at the varsity level. He currently coaches wide receivers (9-12) and will resume his role as jv offensive coordinator. Prior to coaching, Brad is a 2006 grad from Mahtomedi high school and played running back for the University of Minnesota-Duluth (2006-2010).

          Coach Foss teaches Physical Education at Willmar Senior High School, and also coaches varsity boys hockey in the winter. He is married to Rachel Foss and has two kids, Jaelyn (2) and Lukas (3 months).

Rob Baumgarn
Outside Linebackers Coach

Coach Baumgarn began his coaching career in 1998 as a Graduate Assistant at the University of Minnesota-Crookston as a Wide Receiver Coach.   Rob spent two more years at UMC as Outside Linebacker, JV Defensive Coordinator and Special Teams coach. After graduating from UMC, Rob began his career recreation in Willmar in 2001. In 2005  Rob became the 4thHead Football coach at Ridgewater College until 2014.  This is his 3rd year coaching the with the Cardinals. Baumgarn is the Parks and Recreation Director for the City of Willmar.   Baumgarn is married to Gretchen, they have three sons, Drew, Tate and Briggs.

Patrick Courtney
Cornerbacks Coach

Coach Courtney is going into his third year at Willmar High school as a math teacher, baseball coach, and football coach. He has coached baseball for 6 years in Willmar from the 8th grade level to VFW and Legion as well as the high school Freshmen team.  Coach Courtney has coached both the wide receivers and cornerbacks at Willmar High School. He is a graduate of Willmar High School ('13) where he played 2 years of soccer, 2 years of basketball, 2 years of football and 4 years of baseball. Coach Courtney attented Concordia University - Saint Paul ('17) where he played 4 years of baseball as a pitcher and catcher and majored in math.

Michael Heitzman 
Running Backs Coach

Mike Heitzman is starting his first season coaching at Willmar along with his first year of teaching. He is going to be teaching 9th and 10th grade US History this year at the High School. Michael is going to be coaching the running backs and assistant for the JV team this fall. He graduated from Willmar High School in 2015. In High School, Michael participated in Football (4yrs.), Basketball (2yrs.), and Track and Field (4yrs.). While on the football team Michael played running back, linebacker, and returner. 

After High School, Michael attended Concordia College- Moorhead to pursue a degree in Social Studies Education and to continue his football career. Michael now lives at home with his mom Jeanne, dad Ken, and has a brother Matt.

Dustin Carlson
Defensive Coordinator/Safeties

Coach Carlson is starting his 8th year as the Defensive Coordinator for the Cardinals.  He is born and raised in Willmar. He began his coaching career here in Willmar in the fall of 2008 as a 7th grade football coach and 9th grade boys basketball coach.  After finishing High School at Willmar High he went on to play football for Concordia College in Moorhead.

Other than coaching football, Coach Carlson is the Head Girls Basketball Coach and JV Boys Golf Coach.  He is in his 9th year of teaching PE and Health for the Willmar Public Schools beginning at the Middle School for 2 years.  For the past 5 years he has been teaching PE and Health at the High School.

Off the field Coach Carlson is married to his wife Emily (9 years) and has one son Jackson (10).  Emily is an amazing 4th grade teacher at Kennedy Elementary and Jackson is entering 5th grade also at Kennedy.  Jackson also serves as a ball boy Friday Nights.

Steve Grove
Game Changers Coordinator/Linebackers Coach

Coach Grove is originally from Grand Forks, ND and attended Concordia College, Moorhead, MN from 1985-1989.  He got his first teaching job with the Grand Forks Public Schools from 1989-1997. In Willmar, he has taught a variety of social studies courses.  Grove has also been active in the football staff currently putting his 23th year as an assistant. He was also a part of the Willmar basketball program for 18 years.  Grove has been married for 25 years to his wife, Jill, and they have two sons, Alex and Austin, who both graduated from Willmar.

Dain Kalkbrenner
Defensive Line Coach

Coach Kalkbrenner is entering his fifth year of coaching in Willmar, fourth year at the varsity level.  Originally from Atwater, MN coach Kalkbrenner went on to attend Concordia College, Moorhead from 2003-2007. After college he went on to teach and coach at Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton (1yr), Barnesville H.S. (5yrs), and Moorhead H.S. (2yrs), before coming to Willmar.

Coach Kalkbrenner is currently the head jv coach and jv defensive coordinator.  Coach Kalkbrenner teaches Physical Education at Willmar Middle School, along with coaching wrestling during the winter and he is married to Dayna Kalkbrenner (11yrs), and they have two daughters Jayla (14) and Grace (9).

Andy Tupa 
Offensive-Line/H-Backs Coach

Coach Tupa has been coaching in Willmar since 2015. His first year coaching was at the Junior High level before moving up to the Varsity for the 2016 season. Coach Tupa coaches the offensive line and H backs. He is also the head freshman coach and offensive coordinator. 

Coach Tupa teaches 6th Grade English Language Arts at Willmar Middle School. He coaches Speech during the winter.

Prior to teaching in Willmar, Tupa taught in Minneota and Rochester. He was a coach on the 2014 State Champion Minneota Vikings. He also spent the 2012 season coaching at Dassel-Cokato.

Mike Bobbe
Defensive Line Coach

Coach Bobbe will be entering his first season with the Cardinals and 23rd overall.  A 1997 graduate of St. Norbert College in DePere, Wisconsin he started his teaching and coaching career in Minneapolis with stops at Chisago Lakes and Spring Lake Park before ending up in Andover for the past 15 years.    Along with coaching football coach Bobbe will be joining the social studies department at the high school and taking over as head coach of the track and field program. Coach Bobbe and his wife Jennifer, who also works as Willmar Senior HIgh School as an assistant principal have 4 children, Eavan (14), Caelan (12), Miera (10), and Griffin (5).   Along with his family they look forward to becoming part of such a great community.

Jon Gubrud
Wide Receivers Coach

    In the fall of 1993, Jon Gubrud received a secondary science teaching position in the Willmar school district. His wife, Darcy, teaches communications and music at Ridgewater College. They have one daughter, Kathryn, who just graduated(2019). She plans to attend Concordia College this fall. 

Coach Gubrud was on the high school football, wrestling, and baseball teams in Canby Minnesota. He continued to play collegiate football as a running back at the University of Minnesota Morris. Jon coached middle school football in Willmar from 1994 to 1995 and started coaching 9-12th grade football in 1996. Since Coach Konold arrived in 2009, Coach Gubrud coached defense. Starting this year(2019), he will help coach receivers on offense which will be a change that he is looking forward to.
